Carl Vine: String Quintet (world premiere)

Carl Vine: String Quintet (world premiere)

05/11/2009, Perth Concert Hall, Perth, Australia: Jerusalem String Quartet with Zvi Plesser

‘Cellist Zvi Plesser joined his colleagues for the world premiere performance of Carl Vine's new String Quintet. How persuasively the five presided over the first public airing of Vine's newest opus. In the rhapsodic first section, intensity and discord reigned in what came across as a wild and vigorous dance. In the slow movement, the cellos, in particular, sang a soulful, dreamy melody. And after a 7-in-a-bar episode, curiously described as a minuet, we heard the players in virtuosic mode, powering to a close that triggered a gale of applause, reaching a crescendo when the composer came on stage to share the moment with five players who had done his work proud.’
The West Australian (Neville Cohn), 9 November 2009

‘The quartet was joined by cellist Zvi Plesser for the remaining works on the program, Schubert's masterpiece, the string quintet in C, and a new work by Carl Vine for the same combination.
Writing a companion piece to one of the most enduring of all chamber works must be a daunting task. Vine's response is an immediately engaging, melodically driven piece, full of lyrical intensity and vivid harmonic colour. There is a strong narrative aspect to the piece, reinforced by its often declamatory melodies.
Vine's quintet sits cleverly in this program, its lyricism connecting with the Schubert, its lightly bouncing rhythms, especially in the final section, harking back to the Haydn.
Plesser and the Jerusalems relished the challenge and gave a robust, compelling performance that earned an enthusiastic response.’
